My journey from 1991 to 2025: Celebrating International Dance Day

Written by Stacey Richardson

I first walked through the doors of Darlene’s Modern Bodies Dance School in 1991 as a wide-eyed ten-year-old, full of excitement and curiosity. With a background in modern and ballroom dancing, I was eager to explore new styles and embrace the world of dance in all its forms. From those early days at the South Albury Studio, I carry beautiful memories — the joy of movement, the laughter of new friendships, and even convincing my neighbour Tam to join me on this incredible journey.

Darlene was more than just a dance teacher — she was a mentor, an inspiration, and a guiding light. By the age of thirteen, I had the privilege of assisting her with younger dance classes. It was in those moments, nurturing the next generation of dancers, that I discovered my passion for teaching — a spark that would shape the rest of my life.

As my journey continued at the Lavington studio, I took up tap and was honoured to be part of the senior tap group. Even after a year of travel overseas, the studio called me home. I returned to the vibrant new Dean Street location, balancing my university studies with a part-time role at the studio — and there, I had the joy of teaching Jayden, Britney, and Shaylee.

When the studio transitioned to the old skating rink and later the purpose-built Young Street location, I witnessed a beautiful evolution. We welcomed a growing number of mature-age students and embraced the dynamic energy of our ‘Body Motion’ dance style. The Performance group expanded our reach, performing at events and conventions across Wagga, Yarrawonga, and Melbourne — proudly representing our dance family wherever we went.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students aged 3 to 65, across a variety of styles: Modern, Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Body Motion. The memories I’ve made are endless — concert photo days, rehearsals that ran late into the night, costume-making marathons, and the magic of our grand finale: the end-of-year concert.

Today, my dance journey has come full circle. My own children are now dancing — my son in Hip Hop and my daughter in Little Dreamers and Rising Stars. Watching them carry on the tradition fills me with pride and gratitude.

I am endlessly proud of Darlene, Greg, and their incredible children — Jayden, Britt, and Shaylee — for all they’ve built and continue to nurture. Evolve Dance Company is not just a dance school; it is a place where dreams are born, passions are discovered, and lives are transformed. It is an honour to be part of such a vibrant, inspiring, and elite dance community.
